Does anyone know where I can find lyric interpretations of New Order's on the Net?

All of the above links showed me lyrics, but not interpretations of/to them. New Order has cryptic lyrics and I would enjoy reading what others feel they mean.

Crytic lyrics ?if you want, yes.I remember an old interview(just after PCL issued) where Barney said he didn't like to write lyrics! so he just used words without really giving any sense to them - he was talking about Leave me alone, a song the band wrote without any direction.each member giving and word or a sentence to follow another word or sentence. When they did Movement Barney said it was very hard for him to write lyrics...and htey are clearly under influence on this record (JD lyrics influence). Later , in the mid eighties the singer/autor used to say that "words came from above" when he wrote lyrics - so it's maybe the reason of their obscured meanings ? But i don't think there's something important to discover when you read NO lyrics. They are "cryptic" in a way just like many other bands lyrics. It doesn't mean there's an hidden message - or i miss something ? NO Lyrics= garbage ? No. But don't have a headache! |

I'm pretty sure he just did a fuckload of drugs and sang whatever he happened to get down on paper when he woke up the next day. I don't think the local E dealer qualifies as divine inspiration but who knows?

don't change barney in a drug addicted! i never said he didn't absolutely know what he was doing or writing!I never said that! i was just trying to explain , maybe, one of the ways the band used to write lyrics. I remember a call with factory in 1987 - i was writing reviews about NO- and "Brotherhood"was just issued. I asked them if NO "especially liked the human race". so the factory spokeman told me they just choose this title because the word sounded good. They found it on a book cover about freemasson (francs maçons, en français).OK,am i clear ? it's an example of their working way.It doesn't mean they are stupid blokes high on drugs! Barney often speaks about his wounded heart, about relationships, about love and ...temptation. I don't find NO lyrics crytic at all. And ,oh yes, he's often used the words "ship" "sea"... |

To quote the NO Story:
Q:Could New Order have made the music they did without drugs? Steve: No I never said they were stupid or drug addicts I just believe a lot of their lyric stuff was chemically derived. Barney admitted to MOJO that his vocal on the 'Temptation' single was done whilst on a half tab of acid. I don't know where you got the idea that occasional drug use is a bad thing if it gave us these songs and albums? |

I don't think that NO lyrics are really that cryptic. They usually just sing about whatever and have the listener make of it as they please. It's not about the detail or political correctness of the lyrics that makes New Order so cool. It's the fact that you can have 10 different people listen to the same song and come up with 10 different meanings to that song.
I've always liked the lyrics because of it's simplicity. When something so simple can carry such a deep meaning to me (whether planned or not), then i believe that THAT is special. |

bouh bouh bouh!!! again this trouble when we talk about drugs and drug use! I just say what i really think and this forum isn't the best place to develop my point of views.(but i don't think i'm wrong or an old "père la morale". SO STOP! Well - you talk about barney singing on temptation- so may i give you an exemple of a famous rock addict, and a famous song writer too:Mr Syd Barrett. Did you hear some of his great songs ?Drugs , LSD influenced his writing - for sure-...but just for a while ! If you want to hear a singer with pills in his mouth meanwhile he was singing just listen to the "madcap laughs" "barrett " and "Opel". Absolute great songs! lend a ear to his bbc sessions too! But unfortunaly the poor guy lost his mind and health. He's now living in his mother house, somewhere in the cambridge's suburbs...But ...er ...since 1972!!! |

Nah, that was the original beginning to Blue Monday before the power cable to the emulator was ripped from the socket "Lecture me with poetry...tell me that I can" |

Ask Arthouse - after all, she purports to know just about EVERYTHING regarding how profoundly deep all the New Order lyrics are. She IS Bernard's number 1 stalker/groupie rememmber.

Some of the lyrics on the early songs are interesting as they clearly deal with personal feelings about Ian Curtis's suicide and the pressure subsequently put on Bernard Sumner as the band's frontman.
Tony Wilson has said that The Perfect Kiss is about AIDS. The song I'm really curious about is 1963. Presumably this is why people speculate about Sumner's sexuality? (That and his fondness for wearing shorts to nightclubs, I imagine.) Have these lyrics ever been explained? |
